Catherine Ford was raised in Bloomsbury by her maternal grandparents and mother. While she was a small girl, she struggled with an obsessive compulsive disorder and suffered from anxiety because of the word association. Ford was interested in acting during her teenage years and joined the National Youth Theatre. She was accepted into Sylvia Young Theatre School but after just one week she realized that she didn't fit in. Ford applied again to Central School of Speech and Drama and, on her fourth attempt, she was finally accepted. Her classmate was Shaun Dingwall, who would be later reprise her role in the role of Pete Tyler in Doctor Who. Ford graduated in 1993. Before that, however, Ford made a television debut, appearing in Surgical Spirit in an episode that aired in 1991. Ford took the professional name of Catherine Tate. Through the Nineties, Tate could be seen on television in programmes like The Bill, Men Behaving Badly and London's Burning. Her regular work in theatre led her to join the Royal Shakespeare Company, for the 2000-2001 Season. Tate gained not long after her recognition for her stand-up comedies, that were added to Tate's show in the year 1996.
